First electric engine-hauled train reaches Kanyakumari

Train no: 16526 Bangalore-Kanyakumari Island Express on Thursday became the first electric locomotive-hauled train to reach Kanyakumari. The train that left the Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station at 3.30 p.m. covered the 87-km route without any hitches and reached Kanyakumari at 6.05 p.m.

AHEAD OF SCHEDULE

Railway sources said the train reached Kanyakumari ahead of the scheduled arrival time though its departure from Thiruvananthapuram was delayed by 15 minutes. Divisional Railway Manager Rajesh Agrawal and senior officials oversaw the operations in Kanyakumari.

Railways decision to operate electric locomotive-hauled trains on the route came a day after the Commissioner of Railway Safety, Southern Circle, Bangalore, S.K. Mittal gave the nod for the electrified Thiruvananthapuram-Kanyakumari railway line.

Railways will be able to run electric-locomotive hauled trains up to the southern tip of the country with the commissioning of the electrified line completed at a cost of Rs.70 crore.

Mr. Agrawal said that Railways would use electric locomotives on the route from Friday for operating long-distance mail, express, passenger and goods trains.

As many as 20 trains are operating on the Kanyakumari-Nagercoil-Thiruvananthapuram Central stretch daily.

With this, Railways can avoid changing the locomotives of mail and express trains at Thiruvananthapruam Central and Kollam. The CRS has given the nod to operate trains up to the maximum sectional speed of 80 km per hour.

WR PROVIDES UPDATED INFORMATION ON EXTRA COACHES & BERTH AVAILABILITY TO PASSENGERS THROUGH ITS WEBSITE

During the peak season rush of summer vacations, WR in its another initiative, has started providing information of its tentative plan to attach extra coaches in regular Mail/Express trains for the next three days in advance on its website www.wr.indianrailways.gov.in . It is a new service started by WR on its website.
The information of tentative plan to attach extra coaches in WR trains will give the waitlisted passengers an idea of the possibility of getting their ticket confirm as the waitlist is reduced considerably after attaching the extra coach in a train. WR has taken this initiative to keep its passengers updated on the position of probability of confirmation of their waitlisted tickets which would also help in minimizing the role of touts/unauthorized agents who try to take advantage of the lack of information amongst the passengers. Besides it will also bring transparency.
WR has already provided passenger friendly information of its summer specials, augmentation of coaches on day to day basis in regular trains. The tentative plan of extra coaches may vary subject to the availability of coaches and other constraints.
WR's website also gives the current information on availability of vacant berths in its major trains in each direction. Similarly, it also provides current position of clearance of waiting list in each class of major trains in each direction to enable the passengers to have an idea of pattern of confirmation of waitlisted tickets.
This passenger friendly information is uploaded on WR's website under the menu "Passenger & Freight Services" on the home page. The waitlist clearance position of the previous days is uploaded under the head "Waiting List Clearance Position" in the same menu. Availability position of vacant berths in major trains for next few days is made available under the head "Availability Position"
Maximising the use of Information Technology and providing information on availability of berths as well as augmentation of coaches in next 1-3 dayswill help in minimizing the dependence of passengers on touts/unauthorized agents and arresting their menace of touting.

WESTERN RAILWAY GEARS UP FOR MONSOON

In order to keep the wheels of local trains running, Western Railway has started its monsoon preparations. These preparations are being done to ensure uninterrupted services during the ensuing monsoon. These preparations include cleaning of culverts, desilting of side drains, installations of pumps, special maintenance of infrastructure etc.

Analysis of Rainfall and Flood prone areas:
Western Railway did not face a single incident of disruption of traffic during monsoon for the last 2-3 years. This year before starting the preparations, Western Railway has done the analysis of the rainfall of the last 3 years as also identifying the flood prone areas. on the basis of this analysis, more attention will be paid to certain sections which are found to be flood prone such as Marine Lines, Charni Road-Grant Road, Mumbai Central, Elphinstone Road, Dadar, Mahim, Andheri-Jogeshwari and Nalasopara-Virar. An analysis of rainfall has also been done in the areas in the last 3 years.

Western Railway has also come up with the time table showing the dates of high tides of more than 4.5 metres during monsoon 2012. This will help in taking necessary precautions when required most.

Special Pre-monsoon Action:
ØLifting of tracks in low line areas such as Nalasopara, Vasai Road, Kandivali, Malad, Goregaon, Bandra (East), etc.
ØDesilting and cleaning of all 43 culverts is being done with the funds provided by the BMC. This work will be completed in three phases. The first phase will be completed by 31st May, 2012 followed by second and third round after necessary inspections and based on the requirement. Some major culverts will be cleaned by the BMC. BMC has so far given Rs.20 lakhs out of the total Rs.36.88 lakhs .
ØWR will install 52 diesel pumps at vulnerable low lying locations such as Mumbai Central, Dadar, Matunga Road, Mahim, Andheri, Nalasopara, Virar etc. Out these 52 pumps, 40 pumps will be of 20 HP while 4 pumps will be of 32 HP.
ØWR has also undertaken the work of disilting of side drains. This work will be completed by 31st May, 2012. After reviewing the position, this work may again be undertaken in June-July and August, 2012 as per requirement.
ØWR has also undertaken the precautionary work at service buildings as well as electrical and signaling/telecommunication installations. It includes cleaning of terraces and roof gutters, cleaning underground drains etc.
ØIn order to ensure smooth running of trains during monsoon, special attention is being given to the maintenance of OHE. It includes cleaning of insulators, checking of protective screens on FOB/ROB, protection of catenary wires and earthing.

Other Actions:
ØWR will come up with a monsoon booklet and pocket diary for its officers and supervisors in the fourth week of May, 2012. This booklet will not only mention the flood prone areas and important dates of high tides but also the course of action to be taken during such situations. It will also have the telephone numbers of official dealing with disaster management and important telephone numbers of railway and civil officials such as BMC, Weather Bureau etc.
ØProvision of mobile phones and walky talky to the staff.
ØRunning of muck specials to clear the muck and garbage, as and when required.
ØRound the clock monitoring during heavy rains by deputing officers/ supervisors at vulnerable locations.

Coordination with BMC:
Joint inspections of Railway and BMC officials have already been started and the first round will be completed by 31st May, 2012. It also includes provision of pumps by BMC at locations where the blockage in the drainage is likely. Last year, BMC provided pumps at Churchgate.

WR has undertaken the work of trimming of trees in its areas. However, there are some locations where there are some trees in the private areas adjacent to the Railway lines, which need trimming or pruning. Such issues will be taken care of with the help of BMC.

25 MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES FOR DELHI METRO’S SUCCESS…THE SREEDHARAN WAY

The book, “25 Management Strategies for Delhi Metro’s Success, The Sreedharan Way” is an attempt to encapsulate the management strategies that the Delhi Metro management adopted in implementing its first two phases of construction, in the form of 25 different chapters.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has created a benchmark in efficient infrastructure project construction and operation despite facing the hurdles and obstacles usually encountered by public sector organizations in India. The book reveals the strategies and methods that were adopted to ensure that the Metro projects in the national capital were completed within time and budgetary allocations.

The book divides these strategies into 25 chapters and dedicates each chapter to the important aspects of Delhi Metro’s management style such as integrity, professional competency, target orientation, punctuality, crisis management, pace of construction and so on.

Each chapter contains interesting anecdotes that narrate the extent of hard work and commitment shown by DMRC personnel in implementing the project within schedule. For example, the chapter ‘Speed of Decisions’ mentions that the construction sites were inspected by DMRC’s first Managing Director Dr. E Sreedharan and the other Directors on holidays such as Diwali and Christmas also to ensure that the work was not delayed even by a day.

The chapters are also accompanied by rare photographs and illustrations that further explain the dedication with which these strategies were implemented by each member of the DMRC family. Other aspects such as Delhi Metro’s concern for the environment, its continuous efforts to keep the system clean have also been adequately covered by the book.
