Vijayawada-Kazipet third railway line survey soon

Improving the efficiency of the Railway system will help improve faster movement of trains on sections where there were large number of trains running, said outgoing Vijayawada Divisional Railway Manager Anurag.
At a press conference here on Tuesday, Mr. Anurag said that the survey on the laying of the third railway line between Kazipet and Vijayawada will be taken up very soon and the portion (20 k.m.) in Vijayawada Division between Kondapalli and Vijayawada station will be taken up first and completed within two years.
The latest facility to be provided at the Vijayawada Railway Station is a drive-in facility with people able to directly coming onto the Platform No.10 from where three trains to Secunderabad are handled. Showing the facility to the newspersons, he said that a lift was being installed on the platform and an escalator would also come up very soon, for which tendering process had been completed.
The plans for the escalator had delayed the installation and the company manufacturing them had a long queue of buyers.
The platform No.10 would be provided with all the amenities to make it same as Platform No.1 in the days to come and the platform Nos.8,9 and 10 can accommodate the longest passenger train of 24 coaches now, he explained.
A new technology is being tried out at the station to fill water in train coaches just by connecting a hose, when the motor gets activated.
Meanwhile, Machilipatnam will have second platform built to accommodate 24 coaches and the existing one has been extended to 24-coach one so that increase in demand could be met following the Sea Port likely to be built in the coming years.
Buses to stop at Parcel Yard
The Railways is in talks with the APSRTC to make all the City buses to stop at the Parcel Office and take a turn towards the Bandar Road or Eluru Road from the other side of the Canal and avoid coming to the clock tower. This will decongest the whole area, he opined.

Police authorities have requested relatives of those who may have been injured to send them details so that they can identify the victims and those who have been admitted to the hospital with injuries.
10:10 am : The district collector of Nellore has confirmed that the death toll will be between 30 to 35 due to the fire in a coach of the Tamil Nadu Express.
Twenty-six passengers were rescued from the coach S-11 which was completely gutted, PTI quoted Nellore Collector B Sridhar as saying.
Two of the injured were in a serious condition, he said. "The death toll in the affected coach will be around 30-35," he said.
However, an Associated Press report quoted Sridhar as saying that the death toll from the fire had risen to 47.
"There was a short circuit near the toilet and the train was moving at a speed of 110 kms per hour. It was going to Chennai from Delhi. All the passengers were asleep when the fire broke out at 4:30 AM. People were not able to come out immediately," he said.

"I woke up after hearing loud screams. All I could see was black smoke," Y Sampath, a software engineer at Syntel who was travelling aboard the train with his sister, told the newspaper. Sampath escaped through one of the doors that had not been locked. However, his sister who is also a software professional was missing.

25 of the injured have been admitted to a hospital.
0940 am: The rescue train from Chennai has left for Nellore in order to help identify the passengers who were injured or killed in the accident.
An NDTV report says that the doors of the coach may have jammed which resulted in people being trapped after the fire broke out.
The coach reportedly had 17 passengers who boarded the train at Delhi and 11 who boarded it at Bhopal.
The report also indicates that a station master at Nellore may have spotted the fire and got the train to stop.
0910 am: A rescue train is leaving from Chennai to Nellore to transport the relatives of passengers who may have been injured in the accident, reports CNN IBN.
Railway officials say the death toll could be between 25 to 30 people. Five deaths have been confirmed so far, railway officials told the channel.
Rescue operations are still on.
19 coaches of the train have been taken to next station while five coaches have been taken to Nellore, a spokesperson for Southern Railways said.
All the trains on that route are operational now, the spokesperson said.
9:00 am : Several people were killed and others injured after the Delhi-Chennai Tamil Nadu Express caught fire near Nellore in the early hours of Monday, officials said.
It was initially reported by the IANS that five people were killed, though the toll was likely to rise. However, latest Times of India reports suggest that at least 25 people have died in the mishap and the toll is likely to go up.
A fire broke out around 5.30 am in the S11 compartment minutes after the Chennai-bound train left Nellore railway station in south Andhra Pradesh, about 450 km from here.
Nellore district collector B. Sridhar said five bodies were brought out while 15 injured were shifted to hospital.
While 15 passengers are believed to have jumped down from the burning compartment, there was no official word about others. A total of 72 passengers were travelling in the compartment.
A witness told reporters that many were trapped inside when the flames engulfed the compartment. "I was lucky to come out but many passengers could not escape as two doors were jammed and the smoke spread fast," said Sudhir.
Fire fighting personnel extinguished the fire and rescue workers were using gas cutters and other equipment to retrieve the bodies.
Ambulances were pressed into service to shift the injured to hospital.
Top officials including district collector and superintendent of police rushed to the scene and supervised rescue and relief work.
The district collector said burning bogie was detached to prevent the fire from spreading to other compartments.
He quoted some witnesses as saying that the fire was caused by short circuit near the toilet.
As the train was not moving at full speed, some passengers either entered the adjoining compartment or jumped down. However, those sleeping on the upper berths could not escape as the smoke spread fast and even the doors were not opening.
Helpline numbers at Nellore: 0861-2345863, 864, 865, 866 and 0866-2576924; At New Delhi Station: 011-23342954, 23341072, 23341074.

Konkan Rail to introduce sixth rake for RORO service

The Konkan Railway Corporation (KRC) will soon introduce sixth rake for its RORO (roll-on roll-off) service.
RORO is a service that enables carrying loaded trucks directly on the railway wagons between two destinations.
Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, Mr Nandu Telang, Deputy Chief Commercial Manager, KRC, said that the RORO service was started with one rake in 1999. Now it has five rakes in the system.
Considering the good demand from truck operators, KRC is planning to introduce sixth rake on the Konkan Railway route after monsoon.
Earnings via RORO service
KRC, which carried 35,648 trucks through its RORO service in 2011-12, earned Rs 35.64 crore through this.
In spite of economic slowdown during 2008-09 and 2009-10, Konkan Railway earned Rs 22.43 crore and Rs 23.59 crore, respectively through RORO service.
Asked about the earnings forecast for 2012-13, Mr Telang said the corporation wants to earn Rs 40 crore through the service.
The 721-km RORO service between Kolad in Maharashtra and Surathkal in Karnataka takes around 21-24 hours. The truck operator, who makes two trips a week by road between these two destinations, can make three trips a week with the service.
Diesel consumption
On the savings to the nation, he said a RORO service uses around 3,600 litres of diesel by carrying 40 trucks on Kolad-Surathkal stretch.
These 40 trucks together will spend around 10,000 litres of diesel if they use the road to travel this distance. The nation saves around 6,000 litres of diesel with this service, he added.

Central Railway gets cracking on 15-car train project

Central Railway (CR) has begun work on running 15-car services on between Chattrapati Shivaji Terminus and Kalyan by carrying out extension of the length of platforms.
The work on extending the platform is being carried out at platforms at Byculla, Kurla, Ghatkopar, Bhandup, Mulund and Dombivli stations.
A senior CR official said, "Our target is run as many as 10 services by October 2012. Apart from extending the work on the platform, we also have to undertake modification of yard or relocation of signal, wherever necessary."
Unlike WR, CR has decided to first extend the length of platforms where halts will be provided for 15 -car services. Western Railway (WR) introduced 15-car services rakes on its suburban section in 2009. They halt at all the stations between Borivli and Virar, except Naigaon.
The official explained, "On WR halts for 15-car services at many stations were provided months after the services was introduced. For example, it has not yet provided halt at Naigaon station as the work on extending the length of platform is still under progress."
Fifteen-car services on CR will originate and terminate from CST as well as Kurla, Dadar, Thane and Kalyan. The services will be planned without drastically altering the time-table, he added.
The fifteen car services will be increase the carrying capacity of at least 10 services on CR by 33 per cent when compared with 12-car services.
The number of services on CR is 1,573, including 208 services on the Thane-Vashi-Nerul-Panvel-Trans habour route; 580 services are on the Harbour line, of which 172 operate between CST and Bandra, and CST and Andheri. It has already augmented all its 785 services to 12-car from 9-car.

Electrification surveys in two BG sections over

Cost of electrification would be Rs.300 crore. Central Organisation for Railway Electrification (CORE) has completed surveys for electrification of the Erode–Tiruchi and the Tiruchi–Thanjavur–Karaikal broad gauge section.
The exercise was carried out after Railway Ministry in the 2012-13 budget accorded sanction for conducting electrification surveys in the two broad gauge sections in Tamil Nadu. The CORE Chennai Project Unit, which is executing electrification projects in Southern Railway and South Western Railway zone, is currently preparing the estimates for electrification of the two broad gauge sections after having completed the surveys.
The estimates would be forwarded to the Railway Board within a month to obtain its sanction. The cost of electrifying the two BG sections would be nearly Rs.300 crore, CORE authorities told The Hindu . A CORE official said electrification projects at a cost of Rs.550 crore were currently underway in different stretches in Tamil Nadu.
In the Chennai-Tiruchi-Madurai-Knyakumari trunk route, the section from Chennai to Dindigul has already been electrified by the CORE, set up under Ministry of Railway and executing various electrification projects across the country through its nine project units, including the one at Chennai.
Electrification works up to Kudal Nagar near Madurai in the Dindigul–Madurai BG section had been completed and application would be forwarded to Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) to carry out mandatory inspection and obtain clearance. The authorities hope that the stretch from Dindigul to Kudal Nagar would be commissioned by August.
With preliminary works connected with yard modification in Madurai currently on, electrification works in Madurai are expected to be completed by December. Joint checks were on in the Madurai–Virudhunagar BG stretch, which would be commissioned by December. Similarly joint checks were being carried out between Virudhunagar and Tirunelveli. Electrification works in the Tirunelveli–Nagercoil section had also been completed and application would be forwarded to the CRS to carry out inspection and obtain mandatory safety clearance for operation of passenger train services hauled by electrical locomotives.

IRCTC deactivates 44,000 multiple user IDs of agents

Cracking down on misuse of user IDs by agents to corner general and tatkal tickets, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited (IRCTC) has deactivated as many as 44,000 multiple user IDs created by agents in the past 10 days.

In addition, the vigilance teams of IRCTC have also deactivated more than five lakh such IDs. Through this ploy, a handful of people sought to corner the tickets causing distress to the general public, according to Joint General Manager Public Relations, IRCTC, Pradeep Kundu.

The IRCTC — which operates the e-ticketing website of the Indian Railways — has about 1.35 lakh registered agents on its rolls. Some of these agents had generated multiple user IDs using the same mobile numbers and e-mail IDs. Apart from deactivating them, the culprits have been penalised Rs. 20,000 as per rules.

Since July 10, when the revised booking time for tatkal tickets was enforced, the IRCTC has been monitoring the bookings and even cancelling suspicious ones.

The move to segregate the tatkal booking timings, which start at 10 a.m., from the advance reservation period which opens at 8 a.m., has led to a massive jump in the booking of online tickets.

The IRCTC has recorded a high of 4.95 lakh ticket bookings on a single day and the average is around 4.47 lakh per day as against the average of 3.6 lakh tickets prior to the new arrangement.

Abohar-Fazilka train chugs off, finally Minister of State for Railways KH Muniyappa inaugurates the rail link amid fanfare

The much-awaited rail link between Abohar and Fazilka was inaugurated today by Minister of State for Railways KH Muniyappa with the flagging off a passenger train.

The 42 km-long rail link built at a cost of Rs 225 crore connects areas in the border areas of Rajasthan, Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir.

Muniyappa said the Centre was keen to link more areas via rail for which the assistance of the state governments concerned was a must.

He said the Maharashatra, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka Governments shared 50 per cent of the cost incurred on constructing rail overbridges and underbridges. Punjab too should do the same, he suggested.

The Union Minister said the delay in completion of rail projects was normal as it involved land acquisition. This in turn resulted in escalation of the project cost.

Muniyappa said the Centre was keen to restore the traditional rail link between Fazilka and Karachi in Pakistan. This would bring economic prosperity to the border areas of the two countries. Pakistan had already been approached in the issue.

He said work on the Ludhiana-Chandigarh rail link would be further accelerated to help move foodgrain to other parts of the country.

Groupism in the Congress came to the fore during the inaugural ceremony. While CLP Leader Sunil Jakhar and Congress MLA Rana Gurmeet Sodhi shared the dais with the Union Minister, party stalwarts Jagmeet Singh Brar and Virender Kataria chose to sit with the audience, even when invited by Muniyappa to the dais.

Kataria said those who had done nothing for the project had hogged the limelight. Muniyappa, who had breakfast at Kataria’s residence, later went to Jakhar’s house from where he drove to the railway station.

Jakhar urged the Union Minister to introduce air-conditioned goods trains to carry kinnow from Abohar and Fazilka to markets in the South. He also demanded that the frequency of the train to Nanded Sahib and Vaishno Devi be increased to thrice a week. Rana Gurmeet Singh demanded more trains between Chandigarh and New Delhi.

SAD MP Sher Singh Ghubaya, Forest Minister Surjeet Kumar Jiyani and MLA Gurtej Singh also spoke on the occasion.

There was jubilation as the train chugged into Fazilka. People from the town and surrounding areas thronged the railway station.

Jiyani and Ghubaya travelled to Fazilka in the inaugural train. Kataria and Brar sat with commuters in a separate coach. Kataria flagged off the train in its return journey. The Abohar-Fazilka rail line has five railway stations. The rail line includes 106 bridges, four major and 102 minor, and 27 level crossings.

Kashmir rail link by target date

KH Muniyappa, Union Minister of State for Railways, today said the high priority 288 kms long rail link between Jammu and Kashmir Valley would be commissioned within the target in 2017.

Muniyappa told TNS that work on the prestigious project had got delayed due to geological surprises, including seepage of water, encountered during tunneling in the fragile mountainous terrain.

He said the project was a marvel as it consists of the world’s highest bridges and longest tunnels. The 11-km long tunnel was being constructed under the Pir Panjal range to connect the rail line with the valley.

He described the rail project as the “most difficult” that had ever been taken in hand by the Indian railways. It was far more difficult than the rail line that China has laid up to Tibet.

Muniyappa said the government was serious in completing the project within the stipulated time-frame but many hurdles cropped up due to the topography and the limited working season in hilly area.

Tunneling has come as the biggest challenge as unexpected situations were being faced during the execution of work. He said the rail line was being constructed through the areas that had remained the hotbed of terrorism. However, residents of these areas were providing cooperation to the construction staff as the rail link would provide connectivity to the hinterland.

General Manager of the Northern Railways, VK Gupta, said all trains running on the heritage Kalka-Shimla track were being converted into LED lighting system. So far, only one train has been provided LED lighting and the rest would be converted soon.

NWR’s double-decker train ready to be flagged off

The much-awaited double-decker train scheduled to run between Jaipur and Delhi has finally got safety clearance from Commissioner Railway Safety (CRS), which was the biggest hurdle in its operation. The authorities of the North Western Railways (NWR) are now waiting for the railway board to announce the official date to run the train between the two stations.
It may be recalled that the first ever double-decker train for Rajasthan reached Jaipur on April 11 this year and was handed over to NWR.
“The safety clearance has been given to us by CRS. Thus, we have asked the officials of the concerned departments and NWR’s Jaipur division to be ready for operations,” said a senior officer of NWR. The officials claimed that the train could chug off from the first week of August.
“The ongoing Jaipur-Delhi non-stop has been extended till July 20. If this does not get extension, we hope to replace it with the double-decker that would also be operated on the same time table. One cannot speculate the dates but it appears that we will have permission,” said an officer.
However, there is a possibility that it may be chugged off from August 1.
Lalit Bohara, chief public relations officer of NWR said that the officials of the Jaipur division are ready and are awaiting the final dates. “It can start any time now since we have got safety clearances. The dates would be finalized by the railway board,” Bohara added.
Earlier, NWR authorities were waiting for safety clearance and permission for its maiden run from the railway board.
The train had already had two successful trial runs between Jaipur and Delhi.

While briefing media representatives at a Press Conference the Minister apprised them of the developmental works being done by Railways in the State. HYDERABAD Metro rail to chug through 66 stations

Design of the metro rail stations have been finalised and in all, the city will have 66 stations at 63 locations, said a press release issued by Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited(HMRL) on Sunday.

In a first of its kind, all the stations except at Ameerpet, Parade Grounds, and MGBS, will have a cantilever design, that is the station resting only on pillars in the middle with no side pillars. With the entire station resting on only about 10 heavily reinforced central pillarswithout any pillars on the sides, the road below will look open, spacious and airy, claimed HMRL.

A two-level - 'concourse level' and 'platform level'- stations will be built with entry and exit facilities for passengers with staircases, escalators and lifts at the road level. Commuters with smart cards or after buying tickets at the counters will enter the 'paid area' through an 'Automatic Fare Collection' ( AFC) gates. After entering the 'paid area', passengers can go to the next level, which is the platform level again through lifts, escalators and staircases to board the train.

Foolproof security features will be incorporated in the station design with the approval of various security wings of the Union home ministry.

The main security features include access controlled passenger entry with baggage checking arrangements, CCTV cameras and other surveillance equipment, resembling the tight security at airports. The stations will also be provided with fire protection and fire detection systems. The fire prevention system will be of international standards.

Almost all the ongoing works relating to facelift to Coimbatore Junction and creation of passenger amenities will be completed one after the other from September and a station with a complete facelift will be a New Year gift for rail users, said Sujatha Jayaraj, Divisional Railway Manager – Salem on Friday.

Talking to The Hindu , Ms. Sujatha Jayaraj said that the work for creation of second sub-way into the railway behind the Superintendent of Police office and Thomas Park area is nearing completion.

The work for construction of a push-box type concrete structure is in the final stage. The sub-way will be connected with all the six platforms through an escalator.

Foot Over Bridge will be extended to platform 1 A and 5 and 6 and there will be a lift for the benefit of passengers, she said.

Improvements to the platform surface on 5 and 6 have already begun. Issue over the quality of sheets for the roof for the entire length of the platform has been resolved and roof works will also be completed within the next two to three months.

Similarly, elevation for the Western entrance and improvements to circulating area in the Western Side entrance of the Junction are also being speeded up.

Ms. Sujatha Jayaraj said that very soon there would be battery-operated cars for the benefit of passengers, especially senior citizens and ailing persons.

The division was waiting for the sub-way works and platform works to be completed to put these battery-operated cars to use. These cars would be introduced at Coimbatore, Erode and Salem Junctions.

Rail connectivity

D. Lakshmanan, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager added that for improving rail connectivity, the Division has already strongly recommended introducing overnight trains to Bangalore, Rameswaram and Mayiladuthurai from Coimbatore besides pressing for the extension of the Jodhpur – Bangalore Express upto Coimbatore as announced twice in the railway budget.

The Salem – Karur new railway line would be thrown open for cargo traffic first and after the inspection of the section by Commissioner of Rail Safety, the line would be dedicated to the nation for rail traffic well ahead of the New Year.

When asked about enhancing terminal facilities such as yard and pit-line for coach maintenance taking into account the future growth of the region, Ms.Sujatha Jayaraj said that considering that Coimbatore Junction lacks the required land, the administration was already exploring the possibilities of setting up such facilities wherever land was available, be it Coimbatore North or Podanur.

Talking to reporters after inspecting the Mettuppalayam Junction, Ms. Sujatha Jayaraj said that the railways was seriously considering steps to concede the demand for operating the Coimbatore – Mettuppalayam passenger train on Sundays also.

Additional coach

This train would be augmented with an additional coach to cater to the increasing passenger patronage.

Coimbatore Railway Struggle Committee has also presented a memorandum asking the railways to permit them to construct a building for one of the en-route defunct stations on the Coimbatore – Mettuppalayam station.

The committee had urged revival of Urumandampalayam, Veerapandi and Pudupalayam as the train was halting only at Periyanaickenpalayam and Karamadai stations.

The DRM also said that works relating to electrification of this section are also being stepped following an announcement in the budget. Electrification of the section would help in operating Mainline Electrical Multiple Units (MEMU).
